Never lie! Besides the fact that no one will really take you seriously, you can be easily considered a spam and your profile soon suspended. The best is to use a picture of yourself, the way you are now. By the way, this also goes for posting pictures from 20 years ago!
Show yourself, but in a decent way! Many serious dating websites to have specific requirements regarding the ways in which their members should behave and this also includes avoiding nudity. Especially if you are looking for a serious match, half- or completely naked pictures will not help you at all to reach a specific and serious audience anyway.
Always smile! We all have a bad day once in a while, but this is not a serious reason to take a picture of us in such a depressive stage. You have to show your potential dates the best in you and display your image in your best days: smiling, serene and attractive.
Why should we care about your drunk pictures? Getting drunk to a party, it can happen, but picturing yourself in such a pathetic moment is not the smartest decision of your life. After all, what you are looking for, a partner for long drinking sessions or your perfect match?
Get your ex out of your picture! Why should your potential date see you smiling and happy hand in hand or kissing your ex? It usually sends a message – that can be right – that you are not ready to date. No one wants a first date when you keep talking over and over again about your ex-, and getting him or her out of the picture is the best way to send the right message. And the excuse that this is one of the best picture does not work. Nowadays there are so many professional photo editing programs that can help you to just cut the other person out of the picture.
Avoid pictures of your children! Sometimes, it might be enough to just mention that you have children from previous relationships, but posting pictures of them is not a smart ideas. Besides serious privacy considerations, it does not help you to advance with your dating projects at all.
Get professional! Do you have a good friend passionate about photography? Why not organise a simple photo session for a professional shooting? Posting a couple of selfies does not help too much as it is preferably to show at least one full photo of you and as usual, a professional eye can help you to outline the best of your personality and presence.
Let your face be seen! Do you have privacy concerns and you are afraid that your pictures posted on the online dating site can affect your professional life? Many websites to have the choice of setting privacy standards allowing the password-based access only to selected candidates. This is a much better choice than posting instead a cartoon picture or a flower or  a cat.
